Tips for choosing the perfect photographer for you!
If you are reading this then you are probably on the hunt for a photographer and have noticed there are hundreds of us hehe. So, how do you choose?
You want someone who can capture your baby exactly how you see them, capture those tiny little features in a way that no Iphone camera possibly could. You are looking for a true professional that will provide you with not only beautiful photos and products but a lovely experience to remember.
Photo’s are different from anything else you will purchase, clothes, toys and prep machines can be outgrown. However, photographs are an investment that you can cherish for the rest of your life. They are all you have to look back on and show your children when they are older, and then they can show their children one day. So, trusting someone with this precious time in your life is important.
Below are some things I believe you should consider when choosing your photographer
As I said above you are entrusting someone to capture one of your big life events – your new baby! It is my job to photograph that baby in a way that he/she will never be again – brand new. Therefore, I dedicate my time into planning your shoot and making it such an enjoyable relaxing experience. I only do one newborn session a day so that I am giving my clients my full attention and I make them my sole focus for that time. They are paying me to do a job and as a person and photographer I want to make them happy and do that job well. So look for someone who understands that your time is just as precious as theres and that this time in your life is so important. Newborn session can last a couple of hours (2-4) so find someone who will give you that time and not rush you!
If you don’t work in the photography industry, safety might not be something that comes to mind when you think about hiring a photographer. However, choosing someone who knows exactly what they are doing and always puts your babies safety first is so super important! I have worked with over 100 newborns and I have had training from some of the industries best newborn photographers and my number one priority is always safety! Many of you may not know but a lot of newborn photos are composites (When two or more images are merged to create one final image.) Below is an example of a composite:
When you look at a photographers work and love their styling, their poses, their editing then they are probably a good match for you. Not all photographers can achieve the same standard and recreate a style. Personally, I have spent 4 years developing my style, I have spent hours upon hours, researching and practising and creating a style that I love. There are a lot of us out there so choose someone who’s photos make your heart feel fuzzy lol.
None of the above would be possible without years of training, researching and dedication. You want someone who knows what they are doing, someone who understands their kit and knows how to deal with any situation. I graduated with a Diploma in photography after 3 years of studying. I have also invested and continue to invest in a lot of training classes and books from some of the industries leading photographers so that I am producing a standard of work that myself and my clients are happy with. Do your research – make sure who you are hiring is able to produce what you are looking for.
Photography is a luxury – so hiring a photographer isn’t something you necessarily need but its something you want. Therefore, money does play a huge factor when making a decision. If you can find a photographer, who’s style you love, is safety trained and will give you their time for a price within your budget then perfect! But if they tick all the boxes but are too expensive then you have a big decision to make. Ask them if they can create a bespoke package for you? Can you pay up? There are options sometimes. Personally I would never put a price on safety, so having experience working with babies should be crucial for you when choosing. Here at Kellyann Fitzpatrick Photography I aim to make my services affordable for every family. Why? because no one should have to settle for something they are not happy with due to money. We are talking about capturing your baby before they change again, in my opinion you can’t put a price on a life long investment like this.
Remember the saying “You get what you pay for” well it is true. I am not the cheapest photographer out there and I am not the most expensive but I charge what I think my work and time is worth and over time that will change as I grow just like any business. I offer a small session fee to cover my time etc then you purchase whatever you want after seeing your gallery. So its up to you what you spend :).
Thank you for considering me as your photographer and I hope that whoever you hire, whether it’s me or someone else that you are extremely happy with your new life long investment!
